In Summer 2008 Dr. Sharp's lab welcomed a number of new graduate and undergraduate research assistants, including:
Steve Laun, GRA working on nitrification in chloraminated water distribution systems
Matt Jessup, GRA working on Chloramine corrosion of bronze and other distribution system materials
Natalie Dubanowitz, an O'Connor GRA Fellow, working on Biodegradablity of Dissolved Organic Nitrogen
Carol Murry, UGRA, Characterization of Dissolved Organic Nitrogen ini BNR WWTPs
Marc Santos, GRA, Characterization and Treatability of Manganese Deposits in Aqueducts
Feburary 2008 Environmental Engineering graduate student Brent Gaylord
won 1st Place in the Best Student Paper Award at the 80th Annual Meeting
of the New York Water Environment Association for his paper titled
"Impact of Chloramine Disinfection on Biological Regrowth
and Corrosion in Distribution Plumbing Materials." The paper was co-authored
by CEE graduate Eammon Coleman. Eammon has taken a job at Hazen and Sawyer
Engineering in New York and Brent has taken a job at USEPA Region 2 in NYC.
Their paper described research which was funded by the NYC DEP.

Professional Background:
Robert is the Donald J. O'Connor Endowed Faculty Fellow of Environmental Engineering at Manhattan College, where he teaches and directs externally funded research is advanced water and wastewater treatment, regrowth, and bioremediation. In addition, Robert Sharp is a process specialist for the consulting firm Schoor Depalma Engineers. He has a BS and MS in Civil Engineering from the University of New Mexico and a Ph.D. from Montana State University. He is a P.E. in New York State, and is an active member of the Met Chapter of NYWEA. Robert Sharp runs an active bio-process research lab at Manhattan College, where both graduate and undergraduate research assistants carry out fundamental and applied research in the areas of microbial ecology, pathogen disinfection and regrowth, plasmid stability, treatment of toxics, bioremediation and subsurface reactive transport. His research results are detailed in over 24 peer reviewed journal articles and has over 40 papers at national and international environmental conferences.
