Spuyten Duyvil Undergraduate Mathematics Conference

Saturday April 5, 2008

Manhattan College, Riverdale, New York

Manhattan College is pleased to host the third annual Spuyten Duyvil Undergraduate Mathematics Conference. This one day conference will feature presentations by undergraduate students and faculty in mathematics and computer science. There will be concurrent panels on undergraduate research and careers in mathematics. Lunch and light refreshments will be provided for those who preregister (see below).

Keynote Address:

Dr. Carl Pomerance

Dartmouth College

The Covering Congruences of Paul Erdos

Can the integers be expressed as the union of finitely many residue classes to different large moduli? This deceptively simple question was raised by Paul Erdos over 50 years ago and it is still unsolved. Erdos wrote of this as his "favorite problem," which is saying something given the enormous number of great problems due to him. In this talk I will discuss the origins of the problem and its connections to some other famous unsolved problems, as well as some very recent numerical and theoretical progress.

The goal of the conference is to offer undergraduates the opportunity to attend and actively participate in a professional mathematics meeting. The 15 minute talks will range from expository presentations to descriptions of original research.

Students may apply for a 20 minute slot to report on undergraduate research projects. Students may also apply to submit a poster.
