Order Isoetales
Quillworts

The quillworts are considered by some botanists to be the last remnant of the fossil tree lycopods because of their peculiar secondary growth, heterospory and presence of ligules.

Description: The sporophyte has an enlarged perennial underground stem, known as the corm. Roots are dichotomously branched and the annual strap shaped leaves grown in a spiral. Leaves have ligules, vertical air chambers and megasporangia or microsporangi, depending on their position on the plant.
