Lycopodium complanatum

This species is commonly known as Ground Pine, Running Pine or Christmas Green. The fertile branches, forked into three or more sections, are poorly supplied with leaves. The prostrate stem grows above ground. (A.) The field picture and (B.) herbarium specimen show leaves of two kinds that make a flattened frond and fan out widely into one plane.
(C.) Photomicrograph of strobilus. The strobilii of this species are closely crowded with sporangia. (D.) Photomicrograph of c.s. of rhizome. The vascular core is "plectostelic", i.e. bearing alternating rows of xylem and phloem.
