Phytoplankton

All algal divisions with the exception of the large multicellular forms can be considered as plankton. It is possible there may have been algal blooms since early geological times. The massive fish kills at the same time may have been incorporated into oil formations and may have contributed to the formation of petroleum in the course of time.

"... and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood. And the fish that was in the river died; and the river stank; and .... there was blood throughout the land." EXODUS 8: 20
