Phytophora infestans was the cause of late blight of potatoes and was responsible for the Irish potato famine of 1845.
The organism grows on leaves. Hyphae grow between the cells thrusting haustoria into neighboring cells and also grow through stomates of leaves which then develop into branched sporangiophores. Raindrops help spread sporangia to other plants.
