Division Dinophyta
Gonyaulax
There are marine blooms of this genus and along with Gymnodinium, these organisms are responsible for the "red tide" in the Gulf of Mexico. Gonyaulax produces a toxin that paralyzes shellfish and Gymnodinium produces other toxins.
