Tissue systems of the shoot

The shoot is the portion of the plant above the roots and is composed of stems and leaves.

The apical meristem of the stem (see the diagram above) forms leaf primordia on its flanks and young stem tissues below the apex during the vegetative phase. In flowering plants, flower primordia are produced during the reproductive phase.
