Welcome to SHPE-MC

On behalf of the 2009-2010 E-Board, We would like to welcome you to the official site of Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Manhattan College Chapter (SHPE-MC). SHPE promotes the development of Hispanics in engineering, science and other technical professions in order to achieve educations excellence, economic opportunity, and social equity.

Our E-Board constitutes of Manhattan College students from different majors. We take pride in our diversity and believe it is fundamental to the success of the chapter and the development of our members. Moreover, we have been recognized by Manhattan College as the "Best Co-Curricular Club" for two consecutive years, and two "Best Leader Awards" presented to former President and External Vice-President.

This year, we would like all of our members to be able to take full advantage of the whole SHPE experience; such as networking with Regional Chapters, attending National Conferences and participating in our activities.

For more information about SHPE-MC, please stop by our office in the Leo Cafeteria or call (718) 862-7820 and one of our E-Board members would gladly assist you.

About Us

The Manhattan College SHPE Chapter was incorporated in 1991. It had initially existed along with the school’s National Society of Black Engineers chapter in as a joint club for a few years prior to separation. The development of the membership in the chapter has fluctuated from year to year, but it is enjoying an upswing at the current time.

In the year, 2004, we changed our logo as shown right above of page. With the logo there was a change in attitude on how SHPE-Manhattan was going to be organized. The idea was to administer this organization as a business where our customers were you and our active members. Fulfilling your needs; our promises, was our first priority. The executive board took into consideration many of our past and current member’s ideas and the same applies for you. Marketing was a second priority; SHPE-MC committed most of our efforts on main campus where students other than engineers study, as well as our freshmen. This created a curiosity from those students that was quickly addressed by active member or at one of our general board meetings. Finally, community service events were made a priority, which justified our chapter as one that cares about the community.

When setting our goal for the amount of members we should have last year (2003-2004) we chose sixty. In the beginning of the semester that seemed as an impossible goal to achieve but, we were not only able to achieve that goal, we were also able to increase the number of active members. Even late in the year, we still receive students that are interested in joining. We usually expect thirty members, roughly enough to fill the classroom. Our goals were fulfilled and surpassed with this year’s membership.
