Lycopodium clavatum

Roots of this species are well developed and the prostrate stem (rhizome) grows above ground. "Lycopodium" means wolf's foot. Resembling this appendage, it is from this species that the Genus derived its name. The (A.) the field picture and (B.) herbarium specimen are graphic illustrations showing how the plant travels through the forest.

(C.) is a photomicrograph of a cross section of above ground rhizome. (D.) shows two views, apical and lower sporangia of a longisection of a strobilus.
