The brown algae occur in oceans and seas, especially in the cold, northern latitudes. Some do grow in warm seas but very few forms are adapted to fresh water. They resemble the green algae in their cell wall construction with an inner wall of cellulose and an outer wall of pectin but differ in wall composition, cellular contents, and structure of motile cells. Two important phycocolloids, algin and fucoidin are important secondary metabolites and are used in the manufacture of beer, toothpaste, ice cream, paint, shaving cream, medicine and soaps.
