Organisms which are animal-like in most of their life cycles, that is, they move around like amoeba and engulf bacteria and other solid matter. Their reproductive bodies contain cellulose which is similar to the higher fungi.

    The Myxomycetes, known as the true slime molds, are acellular and are characterized by a plasmodium, a free living, creeping multinucleate mass ofprotoplasm, enveloped by a slime sheath and totally devoid of cell walls.
