This genus lives in fresh water the plant body possesses very distinct features: 1) whorled branches, 2) rhizoids, 3) organized into nodes and internodes.



Habit of a plant portion. Plants are either monoecious or dioecious. Chara is coarsely covered with lime and most species have a disagreeable skunk or onion oder caused by sulphurated compounds.
