Corine Fitzpatrick came to the School of Education at Manhattan College as an Associate Professor in 1997 from a university in Connecticut . She wanted to return to New York City because of a strong commitment to urban education and the preparation of people involved in the teaching, learning, counseling, and development of young people. Prior to becoming a professor, Dr. Fitzpatrick had a varied professional life. After graduate school, Dr. Fitzpatrick worked on Wall Street, which she left to become an educator. She taught Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies on the high school level in both public and parochial schools in New York City , before becoming a counselor. Dr. Fitzpatrick returned to Columbia University for her doctorate in Applied Developmental Psychology, became a licensed psychologist in the State of New York , and worked in various hospital and clinical agencies while maintaining a private practice. Dr. Fitzpatrick is currently the Program Director for the Counseling Programs at Manhattan College . The programs include a Master's in School Counseling, a Master's in General Counseling, and a post Master's Professional Diploma in Counseling Services. For more information, please visit the Counseling Program website or see Dr. Fitzpatrick talk about the program. Her recent research has focused on two areas: counselor training and learning with technology. She is using video tape analysis for peer review of clinical case studies in counseling internships and exploring how the use of video affects peer evaluations of student presentations and counselor development in case conceptualization. In learning with technology, Dr. Fitzpatrick has focused on collaborating with educators in K-12 schools. The School of Education at Manhattan College was the beneficiary of a large technology grant to enable its professors and K-12 educators affiliated with the College learn technologies and infuse them into their courses. For information on the grant, which just ended after four years, please visit the TITAN website (Transforming Instruction through Technology and Networking). Dr. Fitzpatrick was instrumental in institutionalizing part of TITAN at Manhattan College as the Jasper Educational Technology office (JET). Other research on learning, done with Michael Mucciardi of the JET office, focused on the impact of multimedia on learning; a paper describing the research was presented at the First International Conference on Multimedia. Please see “Learning with Interactive Multimedia: Characteristics of its Impact in Three Different Environments.” As part of the TITAN grant, a Certificate in Teaching and Learning with Technology has been developed to enable educators to gain coursework and applied experience in applying technology to learning. Dr. Fitzpatrick is the advisor for this program. Please visit the Teaching and Learning with Technology website. Personally, Dr. Fitzpatrick enjoys living with her family in New York City (Tom, a lawyer; Tommy, an arbitrage specialist at Deutsch Bank, and Erin, a second year law student at U. of Va. Law School). Weather permitting, Dr. Fitzpatrick rides her bike along the Hudson River from 72 nd St. to the Manhattan College Campus to work. She enjoys tennis, bridge, the piano, off Broadway shows, non fiction books on politics, economics, psychology, and trashy love stories. |
